Melanotan II
Melanotan II (MT-2) is a cyclic synthetic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that acts as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. This broad receptor profile produces a range of biological effects investigated across multiple research areas.
Research has studied Melanotan II for its melanogenic (skin darkening) effects via MC1R, its central effects on appetite and energy homeostasis via MC4R, and its role in arousal signalling via MC3R/MC4R pathways. It is the parent compound from which PT-141 (Bremelanotide) was derived, and has been a key tool in mapping melanocortin receptor pharmacology.
